Wrote Sometimes Believe in the mid-1990s, attempting to be Lennonesque, a-la 1970. Honest, brutal, adrift, and dispirited in those days, I penned a lot of truth, melancholy, and anger.  Life is beautiful, poetic, an intense, sublime gift, sometimes nasty, and maybe devastatingly so. Would have been easy then to stay down, call the fight, or throw in the towel. Pick any loser's idiom. Certainly wanted to. Read this line somewhere though from a Robert Service - a British-Canadian poet "Just have one more try. It's dead easy to die". Viola! Inspiration.

Fast-forward to 2016:  Richard Cummins, a very talented Canadian multi-instrumentalist musician, singer, songwriter, and producer, surprised me by taking my austere version of the tune and dressed it up. He added instrumentation, vocals, effects, and arrangements, producing a rather cool tune, a-la Jeff Lynne. Love what he did here! Hope you do too! Tip of the hat and deep appreciation, Richard!

We've all got to sometimes believe. Hope you enjoy!

In 1997, after the unfortunate break-up of TED302, I decided to head to Galway, Ireland, to busk alone across Europe, to start from scratch, to just sing a song, and find joy in making music again. I shipped my batch of our recently completed CD (about 700 CDs) to Galway, Ireland to sing them and sell them on European street corners, making my way eventually to the Czech Republic. Life began anew for me there. I played a lot of festivals, made a lot of friends, and wrote new songs. Some of the best times of my life. I returned to the States eventually and recorded "Go It Alone". I call it my "busking album". It's just my voice, an acoustic guitar, and those songs I sang for my supper with across Europe, the US, and in Central America. Hope you'll enjoy a listen. They are for download sale here, if interested. I am grateful.

NEW RELIGION - 2020 Hindsight

From 1985-1989 I was with an original group called New Religion. We were a goth-pop band based in the San Francisco-Bay Area. The band featured Mark Blasquez, Andy Blasquez, and me as the core, but many musicians supplemented the project throughout our tenure. We were working on our craft as musicians and songwriters, influenced by many 80s bands such as Gene Loves Jezebel, The Police, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, U2, Cocteau Twins, Brian Eno, Tones on Tail, Killing Joke, Public Image, Ltd., The Producers, Love & Rockets, Peter Murphy, etc.; but also anchored in old supergroups like The Beatles, Elton John, Van Halen, etc. The 1980s were a great time for music!

In 1988, we released a small EP self titled New Religion, and performed live from 1986 to 1989. The band made it to headliner status by January of 1989 but life's galactic forces pulled us apart by mid-year. Nothing tragic or dramatic there. We've remained great friends and worked together over the years. When the COVID-19 virus hit, we decided to have some fun and bring the New Religion project back to life; remotely of course. We're calling this project New Religion - Hindsight 2020, and have re-recorded acoustic versions of songs from our 1988 EP.

The songs and other merchandise items are available for purchase on the New Religion website: www.newreligion.band

Love Likes Fire

Love Likes Fire may have actually been the last song New Religion ever recorded. I wrote the lyric and most of the music on this one. Was trying to write a Leonard Cohen-esque lyric that spoke of the beauty, sensuality, fear, vulnerability, reflection, and the honesty that appears with intimacy. Wanted the music hypnotic, trance-like, perhaps a bit primal. Of the many cool things about working with Mark, Andy, and Randy Gallerin (on drums here) was that they were always great at translating my description of the "feel" of one of my tunes into music. I remain deeply appreciative of that.

Andy created the video below.  Hope you enjoy!
